Physical fitness is defined as the bodys ability to function efficiently and effectively in work and leisure activities, to be healthy, to resist disease and to meet emergency situations.

Fitness can be divided into the following categories;

  • Aerobic fitness
  • Muscular strength
  • Muscular endurance
  • Flexibility
  • Body composition

Physical fitness can also prevent or treat many chronic health conditions brought on by an unhealthy lifestyle or ageing such as;

  • Cancer
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Dementia

Health

The World Health Assembly defined health as "a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absense of disease or infirmity."
The World Health Organisation supplemented this by stating that health is "a resource for everyday life, not the objective of living. Health is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities."

Physical health

Physical fitness is good bodily health, and is the result of regular exercise, proper diet and nutrition and proper rest for physical recovery. It is also influenced by individual and general standards of living and quality of life.
Studies show that in developed countries, the lack of neighbourhood recreational space that includes the natural environment leads to lower levels of neighbourhood satisfaction and higher levels of obesity and therefore lower overall wellbeing. Personal health partially depends on the cultural, social and environmental structure of one's life.

Health maintenance

Achieving health and remaining healthy is an active process. Effective strategies for staying healthy and improving health include the following;

  • Nutrition : The use of food and dietary supplements that improve performance, promote health/cure or prevent disease/and improve the immune system.
  • Stress management : The appliance of strategies to either reduce stress or increase tolerance to stress.
  • Exercise : To improve physical fitness, especially cardiovascular fitness, boost the immune system and increase tolerance to stress.
  • Workplace wellness : Programmes may include smoking cessation and training related to stress, nutrition and weight management.
